Symbols in Advertising

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

When considering Your next advert whether it be an online banner or a billboard for Your local overpass the symbols that You use are of utmost importance in conveying Your message. After the colors but before the words the symbols are what people’s minds pick up on so take time picking out the right ones for Your advert. These represent stability, conformity and control. What this shape conveys if it is used in Your company logo or advert is that You are stable and a staple in Your field. It also represents safety. One thing to note is that rectangles and squares with hard edges are used when You want to really get the point across that You are a well defined, thought out company or service. When rounded edges are used it conveys a sense of a more relaxed structure or service. These represent power and yet again stability. The difference with the stability represented by a triangle is that it is further reaching. When the Pharaohs of Egypt considered what shape to make their tombs they chose the Pyramid which is essentially overlapping triangles on a square base. This was meant to signify eternity and as You can see they’re still doing pretty well. Use the triangle when Your company wants to come across as not only a leader in it’s field but one that will be around forever. One thing to consider though is that when triangles are inverted so that the point is at the bottom they become feminine symbols and are best used for companies with products meant predominantly for Women.

These represent being inclusive of everything. This stems from the fact that the Earth is round. Use circles when You want to be considered as ‘being everywhere’. If for example You have a delivery company including a circle in the design for Your company logo would evoke a sense that You delivery everywhere and anywhere. These are generally used in medical or pharmaceutical company logos and designs. Reason being that they look like pills. My suggestion would be to use them in this manner. Elsewhere they become ambiguous. When considering what kind of lines You are going to use it depends on whether You want to be considered as ‘straight edged’ or ‘fancy free’. Straight lines would imply a more straight edge approach and squigly lines fancy free. Outlines of common shapes seen in people’s day to day experiences are also a great bet so simply look around and see what shapes You readily recognize and what they make You feel.
